The Bell Jar

BOOK COVER PROTOTYPES

Inspiration: The design was conceived from an excerpt from the story, where our protagonist, Esther Greenwood, describes her life as a fig tree with bountiful opportunities slowly rotting away in a life she calls the bell jar.

Adobe Software: Illustrator, Photoshop

Inspiration: Instead of making the object of the bell jar as the focal point of the cover I chose to rely on the choice of typeface, selection of colour, and the simple layout of the content to express Esther Greenwood's mute mental breakdown from her trapped life.

Adobe Software: Illustrator, Photoshop

Inspiration: I made the bell jar on this cover look like it is echoing to illustrate the lingering effects of her depression on her life.

Inspiration: Similar to the design above, I decided to wrap the image of the bell jar around the book cover, to mimic the presence of her depression in all aspects of her life.
